“Janice came to us with a definite goal of walking 100 km of the Camino de Santiago in Spain pain/injury free. She has had past knee injuries and car accidents that have hindered her activity level in the past but she was determined to get in the best condition possible for the walk. 

Janice was consistent in her workouts and added walking with a weighted backpack to her fitness regime to best prepare for the demands of the journey along the Camino.

What made you decide you wanted/needed to start a program?

I came to Lean Strong Fitness after having been disappointed with my inability to motivate myself to exercise.

I joined clubs…and didn’t go. Signed up for classes, but soon lost interest as I got frustrated not being able to keep up.

I found that the more I felt myself losing fitness ability, the more I just didn’t want to get started again.

I joined LSF when I saw there was lots of personal care for my condition and there was a true desire to support my well-being through weight training.

At LSF I found that the people there cared. They care when you don’t show for class, when you get injured and discouraged about the slow

pace of healing.  They care about your ideas and opinions and act upon them.

It is small enough to get to know other members; and community events are planned (yoga, hiking, food challenges and other gatherings,) that helped me feel like I am part of a community that is health conscious.

What was your life like prior to starting at Lean Strong Fitness?

I turned 60 and soon noticed that you really can ‘use it or lose it’. I was studying and spending a lot of hours at a desk on the computer or in classes where there were long days of sitting and taking notes.

My back and knees got very sore even though I was so keen to learn about spiritual psychotherapy and spiritual direction. I needed to get some motivation and so I planned a trip to walk the Camino in Spain after classes were over.

 

What were your most important goals when you started? Why were these important to you?

Walking the Camino in Spain and hiking 20km daily was one of my lifetime goals.

Describe any reservations that you had before we started working together? Whydid you have these reservations?

I was nervous about walking the Camino in Spain and hiking 20km daily. I thought that the injuries I have sustained after 5 car accidents would stop me from realizing this goal

Explain how we were able to help you with your reservations. What were some specifics we were able to help you with?

I found lots of support and the technical know-how from the experienced trainers.  I was never bullied or shamed by my size or physical challenges.  I am pleased to say “I DID IT!  Walking the Camino was intense but I kept my faith…in myself and my determination to succeed

What results have you achieved since starting your program? What are your proudest accomplishments so far?

Hiking the Camino in Spain is definitely the biggest goal I have achieved thus far.

What do you want to accomplish next?

I now look forward to going on hikes with the Guelph Trail Club.

What do you like best about our program and how would you tell your friends about us and what we do?

If you are thinking about a place that has excellent customer service and is able to relate to the more mature body that has lived life with many experiences, then come in and see what LSF is about. Everyone at LSF truly care about you. Thank you LSF.
