— A note from Jess’s coach, Austin:
Jessica joined our studio nearly one year ago to the day with the goal of improving her overall health in order to counterbalance the effects of her busy desk job and lifestyle.
Today, I can proudly say that she’s accomplished nearly every one of her initial goals. A leaner, stronger, and healthier woman than she was last summer, Jessica continues to test the limits of what she’s capable of each and every session – leaving both coaches and members in awe!
We are thankful Jessica decided to seek us out for her goals as she’s become such an important part of the family and a leader in the Lean Strong community, welcoming new members with a bright smile and leading the way by example.
We love the bubbly personality she brings to each session and the willingness to embrace any challenge we throw your way! No doubt, she’s “turned the switch” back from sedentary to active this year and we know Jessica will keep it on for many more years to come 🙂
What was your life like prior to starting at Lean Strong Fitness?
Previously I committed myself to going back to school while working full-time and volunteering for 2-years.
At the time, my major commitments had placed me into a sedentary lifestyle. I would work at a desk all day, to only work all evening and most weekends on course work.
When I would go out, I would be around a meeting table volunteering, or often socially around a dinner or pub table.
I did manage to participate in a boot camp style class and go for a walk with a friend once a week. This reduction in physical activity was a big difference for me.
Additionally, to save time I frequently purchased my meals, and thus my body composition changed – My weight went up, my body fat went up, and my muscle mass went down.
What made you decide you wanted/needed to start a program?
The 2-years ended and it was time to get back into shape. I remember visiting my doctor for a routine physical (just after that stage of life) and for the first time my blood pressure was high (normally always low) and my waist circumference was placing me into an “At Risk” category.
Although I knew my body had changed, I was shocked that it was to the point where my actual health was at risk.
I was disappointed that I had let my health decline to that level.
What were your most important goals when you started? Why were these important to you?
I wanted to get moving again, I wanted to feel more energy, and I wanted my body to look more like the image I had of myself in my head.
However, despite a desire to change I was finding it extremely difficult to “turn the switch” from a sedentary to an active lifestyle. Being sedentary for 2-years changed my routine and created habits difficult to break. Mentally, this was difficult for me because for the most part I have always could self-motivate myself to do what I need to do.
However, despite trying a few different techniques, I could not muster enough personal motivation to perform the necessary changes to facilitate my own success.
It was around this time that I happened to see a Lean Strong Fitness advertisement on my Facebook feed. I impulsively signed-up to join a program and meet with the owner, Ben. Ben walked me through my goal setting process and my goals when getting started were as follows:
- Get moving and stronger.
- Drop the extra lbs and inches.
- Change my routine through healthier daily habits such as eating more protein and having a calorie consumption range.
- Get motivated to carry-out my goals
Describe any reservations that you had before we started working together? Why did you have these reservations?
Because nutrition and motivation were my larger obstacles, I registered for the 6-month coaching package in addition to the Personal Training and Physio programs.
My first reservation was the money. I mean I could have gone on a nice vacation for the price of the 6-month program! The idea of paying someone to get fit and help change my habits was a difficult concept to swallow.
Also, the time commitment of 6 months was difficult for me. I did not want to be locked down into anything that I could not get out of.
Explain how we were able to help you with your reservations. What were some specifics we were able to help you with?
I ultimately registered because I had not been successful in making the necessary changes on my own.
I concluded that I needed help and accountability and I thought that the Coaching, Personal Training, and Physio package was the best way to “turn the switch” from a sedentary to an active lifestyle.
What results have you achieved since starting your program? What are your proudest accomplishments so far?
- My weight went down, my body fat went down, and my muscle mass went up.
- I no longer feel like my warm-up is part of my workout.
- My weight lifting knowledge and form has improved.
- My energy has improved.
- My muscles are starting to show through.
- My injuries have reduced.
How is your life better now that you have achieved these results? Is there anything you can do now that you didn’t do or were hesitant to do before?
- I went from not being able to do a push-up, to being able to do 10.
- I can lift over my body weight when squatting.
- I can now do a pull-up – I did my first one ever just the other week.
What do you want to accomplish next?
Overall, I want to respect my body live by living a lifestyle that strives to preserve my ability to be and hopefully remain able-bodied.
Specifically, I want to:
- keep improving my strength.
- find a heightened level of motivation to drop my body fat % to help my muscles shine through 🙂
What do you like best about our program and how would you tell your friends about us and what we do?
The truth is you can get a fitness program from a lot of different professionals in the field.
It’s not necessarily what Lean Strong Fitness provides me with (although that is what is part of it) that I enjoy and recommend. Rather, it’s how Lean Strong Fitness provides me with the services they offer.
