—A note from Denise’s Coach, Pam
“Denise came to us here at Lean Strong Fitness with very specific goals in mind. She wanted to get stronger, stop being tired & hurt, and increase her energy and endurance for her Ride to Conquer Cancer on June 9 & 10, 2018. She has been a participant in this fundraiser for the last several years not only riding but also quilting, baking and organizing to contribute to the efforts of Team Kortright to enter and work as a team.
Denise has totally changed her outlook into regular exercise and made it a part of her life, scheduling it in and making it a priority so that she will be as fit for her ride as possible. An added perk that she has also experienced is weight loss and wearing smaller sizes than when she started!
Your dedication, Denise, both to yourself and the ride has been evident in the results you have achieved in the last 6 months. You are an inspiration to all our Lean Strong Family members as well as to your fellow riders.
I feel honored to be a part of your journey to continue to give to the community while taking care of yourself!
What made you decide you wanted/needed to start a program?
I had been thinking for awhile that I needed to do something. I had gone to the doctor for my annual physical and the doctor said that everything was great except for my weight.
So while everything was good I needed to make a change before things changed. I was also tired of everything hurting. I had been going to another the gym working on the bike/treadmill but knew I needed more than that.
What was your life like prior to starting at Lean Strong Fitness?
I had gone to the gym off and on. For the last 7 years I have participated in the 200km Ride to Conquer Cancer. My first year I attempted to do it with very little training at all!
Since then I have done a bit more training than that. Some of those 7 years I have almost completed the ride. Last year I fell off my bike during a training ride and that really set me back.
So last years ride was not my best. That is also one of the reasons that spurred me on to do something different.
I am committed to finishing the ride this year. I also would not always eat the most healthy foods. I would eat a lot of takeout because it was convenient.
What were your most important goals when you started? Why were these important to you?
One of my goals was to lose weight and get in better shape. It is important to me because I am worth it!
Also I was tired of hurting all the time and I want to be able to complete the Ride to Conquer Cancer.
Describe any reservations that you had before we started working together? Why did you have these reservations?
I was afraid that I would have to count calories and that was something I didn’t want to do. The cost was an initial concern for me – it felt like a big commitment.
Explain how we were able to help you with your reservations. What were some specifics we were able to help you with?
Ben was great at relieving any reservations that I had and answering my many questions. I also called another member of the gym for reassurance that I had made the right decision.
He explained to me how he doesn’t count calories and how the team worked with him to develop a plan that worked for him.
Once I met with my coach, Pam, all my fears were relieved.
What results have you achieved since starting your program? What are your proudest accomplishments so far?
Since I started I have lost over 20 pounds!
What do you want to accomplish next?
I want to continue to lose weight and get stronger. Ideally I would like to lose another 100 pounds – one step at a time!
And completing the Ride to Conquer Cancer and feeling strong while doing it is really important to me!
How is your life better now that you have achieved these results? Is there anything you can do now that you didn’t do or were hesitant to do before? Doesn’t need to be a ‘fitness’ only thing – any aspect of life!
Since joining Lean Strong I have learned how to eat better. Before my excuse for not eating well was that I didn’t have time. I would finish work at 6pm and if I cooked I wouldn’t eat until 8 (because if I cooked that meant that I would have to go to the grocery store first!). So instead I would go and grab fast food. Not the best choice but convenient!
Now I plan for the week, buy groceries and even cook ahead for the week. I also find that I definitely have more energy. I don’t avoid things like I might have before.
Joining Lean Strong was the best decision I made for myself.
What do you like best about our program and how would you tell your friends about us and what we do?
What I like best is the accountability that Lean Strong provides.
My activity level has increased. Things that I may have avoided before don’t stop me now. I also eat much better not because I am on a “diet” but because that is what my taste buds want. I actually cook for myself and have food in the house.
What I would tell my friends?
Joining Lean Strong has given me a family and support to help me get stronger and lose weight. There is no judgement here. The coaches help you with all aspects of life helping you change one habit at a time.
If you are stuck in your fitness goals and need someone to help you get back on track, then Lean Strong is the place for you.
