Before I started Lean Strong Fitness & Wellness, I was often told to hang out with other entrepreneurs. My mentors told me this repeatedly because they knew something I had yet to learn.
Like attracts like.
If you want to be a successful business owner, then hang out with successful business owners. You’ll learn so much from them and have a network of people that understand you and your goals.
The same goes for you if you’re trying to reach your own personal goals.
Like attracts like – If you want to lose some weight, get stronger, improve your habits, or simply be healthier… hang out with people that have the same goals
One of the worst things you can do is hang out with people who don’t agree with your goals and will possibly sabotage them. You probably have someone in mind that does this to you – and unfortunately it’s often people close to us.
I remember a past client who had a bunch of different goals. One of them included smoking cessation. She had such a hard time quitting because her best friend (a smoker) routinely jeered her and poked fun at her for trying to quit. She would blow smoke towards her friend and make comments about how good her cigarette was.
Now, if you’re a non-smoker like me, this may sound crazy. How in the world does a cigarette sound good? Well, when you’re addicted and trying to quit… your brain and body crave tobacco.
It’s important to understand habits and addiction.
They’re not that much different in terms of this article. So maybe the smoking example is hard for a lot of people to relate to these days.
Here is something that a lot of people can understand…
Have you ever tried to quit sugar?
Then you know how hard it can be to avoid sweets. They’re everywhere. Donuts are in the office break room, candy is on the counter at your local bank, and the holidays are filled with sugar-loaded delights.
So, we all know how hard it can be to get away from our vices. That’s why it’s critical to find others that understand your goals AND your obstacles.
What is your goal and where can you find someone or a group of people that understand you?
Find them, get to know them, and expand your community to include people on the same journey as you.
You’ll be able to offer support and get support like never before – and that’s a huge benefit to you actually succeeding in reaching your goals.
Obviously this is what we help people with at Lean Strong Fitness & Wellness – the “hidden” benefit to our personal training programs is that as a member you’re by default part of a like-minded community. When one of the people in your session hit their goal, or tackle a new habit it’s inspirational.
And they’ll give you the same support when you are making progress, or even feeling stuck.
It’s also crucial to make your community one of like-minded people, both inside and outside of the gym.
